Much of our work involves the refurbishment, alteration and extension of existing buildings. We aim to unlock the potential of these buildings, making them suitable for new or changing uses, whilst respecting the important qualities they may have. This requires a careful examination of the existing structure, and an assessment of its potential for transformation. Our approach will often be to express modern insertions into old buildings as distinct elements, whilst the original building fabric will be repaired using traditional building methods and materials. AAB architects has experience of working with listed buildings, and within conservation areas, across London. Our experience has generally been that by working with local authority conservation and design officers, and carrying out the necessary research, successful solutions can be achieved. Alice Brown is a member of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Twentieth Century Society.
