AAB architects obtained listed building consent for an extension and alterations to this small house, located in the Embankment area, the oldest part of Twickenham. The whole site, which slopes down towards the river, is characterised by retaining and boundary walls, which create pockets of enclosed gardens.
The design of the extension relates to this pattern by articulating the layering of space, maintaining the small scale and existing materiality, whilst keeping a clear distinction from the original 18th century building. The new extension is low in profile, in order not to detract from the original form of the building, and the linear skylight allows views of the back wall of the house from within the building, maintaining the legibility of the original structure.
