We have carried out a series of costed feasibility studies for London Borough of Camden for the refurbishment of their 1930’s listed Town Hall. Camden Council would like to rejuvenate the Town Hall as the seat of local government to meet modern expectations for accessibility and transparency. The brief also includes the provision of flexible office space, enabling more collaborative ways of working and improving the workplace environment for staff.
The building was designed by AJ Thomas, who spent many years working as office manager for Edwin Lutyens. Camden Town Hall has many design elements similar to Lutyens’ buildings, including Britannic House in Moorgate. We carried out detailed research into the original design and construction of the building, and developed proposals that complement the original design intent, restoring original features and inserting new elements. At roof level we proposed removing the non-original additions to the building and rebuilding a new extension.
The project offers the opportunity for the Council to carry out a major Retrofit programme. This aims to reduce carbon emissions through increased thermal efficiency of the existing building envelope, improved natural daylighting and ventilation. We also propose green roofs and a garden within the central lightwell.
We were appointed as lead consultant and worked closely with services consultants Max Fordham and SWECO to develop an integrated strategies for the phased refurbishment of the building.
