ACAN grant

June 2024

AAB architects have been awarded an ACAN grant to create a resident-led retrofit strategy for the Lesnes Estate in Thamesmead.

Designed by the GLC and built in the late 1960s, the estate now faces demolition by current owner, housing association Peabody. Residents on the estate are campaigning to retain their homes, demanding retrofit over demolition.

The strategy will be developed alongside, and in support of the campaign, determining the feasibility of different retrofit options, as well as envisioning how the estate could be better-utilised and improved. This research will be consolidated in a toolkit that aims to enable residents to consider retrofit as part of the solution for their homes, including initial assessment of the physical condition of the building fabric, the implications of fragmented tenures and cost.
