Regents Park Children’s Centre

London Borough of Camden

This project provides a welcoming entrance, with a strong street presence, to serve both buildings on the site of Regents Park Children’s Centre. The brief also included condition improvement works to the 1970s nursery building and fit-out of a space within the extension building for the Council’s Home Support team.

The existing entrance to the nursery was via a side access, whereas the extension building was accessed directly from the street. To create a combined entrance, a brick panel of the nursery’s street elevation was replaced with glazing, and the accommodation behind was reconfigured to form a generous and secure reception area, with a link to the extension building. A high level canopy provides shelter over an existing means of escape route.

Coloured timber cladding is used externally to identify the new interventions, with colourful timber slats at the entrance. Natural materials including lino flooring, Douglas fir and birch plywood are used internally.
